OBD-II fault code

P0657: Actuator Supply Voltage A Circuit Open

What it means

The supply rail that powers a group of actuators (typically injectors, EGR, throttle motor) is open. Multiple downstream actuators stop working.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Actuator supply voltage A powers a group of engine actuators, which may include injectors, the throttle motor, or EGR components depending on the vehicle. P0657 sets when the control module detects an open in this supply circuit, interrupting power to some or all of the actuators it feeds.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Supply relay open
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Possible limp mode or no-start
  • Multiple follow-up faults across modules
  • Reset/relearn may be needed after repair

How to diagnose it

  1. Read freeze-frame data and scan for multiple actuator, injector, throttle, or EGR codes that appeared together, since they may share supply A.
  2. Check live data and symptoms to determine whether the affected actuators lose power together or only under certain conditions.
  3. Inspect the actuator supply A fuse, relay, wiring, and connectors for a loose connection, damaged wire, corrosion, or a pushed-back pin.
  4. Use the wiring diagram to check for power and continuity through the supply circuit, including relay operation, following the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the external circuit is intact, test the control module output and the shared actuator supply path before replacing components.

Common fixes

  • Replace a failed supply relay or fuse after checking for the cause of failure.
  • Repair an open wire or loose connector in actuator supply A.
  • Restore a pushed-back or damaged terminal.
  • Repair the control module output only if circuit testing confirms it is faulty.

Can I keep driving?

An open actuator supply can cause stalling, a no-start, or loss of throttle or emissions-control functions. Avoid driving if the engine stalls or responds unpredictably; continued operation can leave you without power in traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
