OBD-II fault code

P05EC: Cold Start Injection Timing Performance

What it means

During cold-start operation, injection timing does not meet the expected performance. The code does not identify a specific injector or timing strategy.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The engine control module adjusts injection timing during cold starts to support starting and stable warm-up. This performance code sets when the observed injection timing does not meet the expected behavior in the cold-start phase; it does not identify a particular injector or timing strategy.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty or slow-responding injector
  2. Fuel pressure or delivery problem during cold start
  3. Fault in injection timing control or related sensor

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may illuminate
  • Hard starting or rough running when cold
  • Rough idle or reduced power during warm-up

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and compare cold-start live data for commanded and actual injection timing, if available, along with starting and idle behavior.
  2. Check for related fuel-pressure, injector, or timing-control codes that may point to a shared cause.
  3. Inspect fuel system connectors and wiring, and check for leaks or obvious damage that could affect cold-start fuel delivery.
  4. Test cold-start fuel pressure and delivery against the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If fuel delivery is within specification, evaluate injector response and the relevant timing sensors and control circuit using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose or damaged connector or wire in the injection timing or sensor circuit.
  • Repair a confirmed fuel delivery or pressure fault.
  • Clean or replace an injector that fails the specified response test.
  • Replace a faulty timing sensor or repair its circuit.
  • Repair the identified injection timing control fault.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine starts and runs smoothly once warm, keep trips short and avoid hard acceleration until diagnosed; cold starting may become harder and rough running can worsen. Stop driving if it stalls, runs severely rough, or loses power in traffic.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
