OBD-II fault code

P05EB: Cold Start SCR NOx Catalyst Inlet Temperature Too Low

What it means

Same as P22FF but specifically during the cold-start window - the SCR catalyst inlet temperature does not reach the threshold needed for NOx reduction in the cold-start phase, so reductant injection cannot be enabled.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The SCR aftertreatment system uses a catalyst to reduce nitrogen oxides in the exhaust, and an inlet temperature sensor reports how hot the exhaust is before it enters the catalyst. This cold-start code sets when the measured inlet temperature does not reach the required threshold during the cold-start window, preventing reductant injection from being enabled for that phase.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Exhaust temperature remains below the required threshold during cold start
  2. Fault in the temperature sensor or its wiring
  3. Exhaust heat-up or aftertreatment control fault

Symptoms

  • Check engine light may illuminate
  • Possible emissions failure

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and cold-start live data for the SCR inlet temperature and how it changes during warm-up.
  2. After the vehicle has cooled, compare the inlet temperature reading with ambient and other available exhaust temperature readings for an implausible offset.
  3. Inspect the SCR inlet temperature sensor, its connector, and nearby wiring for heat damage, corrosion, or loose connections.
  4. Check for exhaust leaks or aftertreatment damage near the catalyst inlet that could affect heat-up or the sensor reading.
  5. Test the temperature sensor circuit and sensor response during a cold start against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose SCR inlet temperature sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged or heat-affected sensor wiring.
  • Repair an exhaust leak near the SCR catalyst inlet.
  • Replace a temperature sensor that fails response or circuit testing.
  • Repair an identified aftertreatment heat-up or control fault.

Can I keep driving?

A short drive is generally possible if the vehicle has no temperature warning or reduced-power condition, but emissions performance may be impaired until the system warms correctly. Avoid unnecessary trips with repeated cold starts and address the fault before an emissions inspection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
