What it means
An open is detected in the engine oil bypass valve control circuit. The code does not specify the valve’s function or the effect on oil warm-up.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The engine oil bypass valve is controlled through an electrical circuit, and the control module monitors that circuit for continuity. This open-circuit code sets when the expected electrical path is interrupted; the code alone does not establish how the valve affects oil temperature or warm-up.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Open in valve or harness
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- Check-engine light may illuminate
- Oil temperature or engine warm-up behavior may be affected
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and note any oil-temperature or warm-up symptoms before clearing the code.
- Locate the oil bypass valve and inspect its connector for disconnection, corrosion, damage, or a terminal pushed back into the housing.
- Inspect the valve wiring for breaks, pulled sections, or rubbed insulation between the valve and control module.
- With the circuit isolated according to the wiring diagram, check continuity through the harness and valve circuit against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the harness and valve circuit pass, check the relevant module connector and control-side circuit for an open before condemning a module.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and secure the oil bypass valve connector.
- Repair a broken wire or pushed-back terminal in the valve circuit.
- Repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
- Replace a faulty oil bypass valve if its electrical circuit fails testing.
Can I keep driving?
A short drive may be possible if there is no oil-pressure warning, unusual engine noise, or abnormal temperature behavior, but arrange diagnosis soon because valve operation or warm-up may be affected. Stop the engine if an oil-pressure warning appears or the engine overheats.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
