OBD-II fault code

P05E6: Park Brake Sensor or Switch Circuit Range or Performance

What it means

Same as P05E3 with input in plausible range yet not matching expected behaviour.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The park-brake switch or position sensor reports whether the parking brake is applied, and the control module checks that the signal changes as expected. This range or performance code sets when the signal is electrically plausible but does not agree with the brake’s actual movement or expected state.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Worn or misadjusted switch or sensor
  2. Loose or corroded connector
  3. Damaged wiring

Symptoms

  • Park-brake warning light or message may behave incorrectly
  • Check-engine or brake warning light may illuminate

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and watch live park-brake status through several apply-and-release cycles to identify a missed or delayed change.
  2. Inspect the switch or position sensor for looseness, wear, damage, or misalignment that could prevent it following the brake mechanism.
  3. Check the connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage that could make the signal inaccurate without fully interrupting it.
  4. Compare sensor output at different brake positions with the manufacturer's specification and check that it changes smoothly and consistently.
  5. If the sensor output is correct, inspect the brake mechanism and sensor mounting for excess movement or a mechanical adjustment problem.

Common fixes

  • Secure the sensor and correct its adjustment if it is mispositioned.
  • Clean or repair a loose or corroded connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the park-brake sensor circuit.
  • Replace a worn switch or position sensor that does not track brake movement correctly.

Can I keep driving?

The status can disagree with whether the parking brake is actually applied, so check that the brake releases completely and avoid relying on automated hold or stop-start functions. Stop if the brake warning persists or the brake drags.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
