OBD-II fault code

P0528: Fan Speed Sensor Circuit No Signal

What it means

Same as P0526 with no detectable signal at all - sensor not producing pulses despite the fan being commanded on.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The cooling fan speed sensor provides feedback pulses that let the control module verify fan operation. P0528 sets when the module detects no fan-speed signal while fan operation is expected, rather than a signal that is merely inaccurate or intermittent.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Fan speed sensor failed
  2. Open or shorted sensor wiring
  3. Loose, corroded, or damaged connector
  4. Cooling fan motor or fan assembly fault

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Cooling fan may not run or may run continuously
  • Engine may overheat, especially at low speeds or while idling
  • Air conditioning may cool poorly at idle

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live data to confirm the fan was commanded on when the speed signal disappeared.
  2. Inspect the fan-speed sensor connector and wiring for disconnection, corrosion, broken wires, or a short to power or ground.
  3. With the ignition off, inspect the fan assembly and sensor target for damage or obstruction; keep clear of the fan because it may start when powered.
  4. Command the fan on with a scan tool if supported and check whether it turns and whether any speed feedback appears.
  5. Test sensor power, ground, signal wiring, and the sensor output using the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  6. If the circuit is intact but there is still no feedback, test the sensor and fan assembly to determine whether either has failed.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a disconnected fan-speed sensor plug and secure its harness.
  • Repair an open or shorted wire in the sensor circuit.
  • Replace a failed fan-speed sensor after verifying its power, ground, and wiring.
  • Repair or replace a faulty fan motor or assembly that prevents fan operation or speed feedback.

Can I keep driving?

Avoid extended idling and slow traffic if the fan is not operating, and monitor engine temperature closely. Stop safely if temperature rises into the overheating range; continued driving can damage the engine.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
