What it means
Same as P0526 with the signal in plausible range yet not matching the commanded fan speed - typically sensor drift, weak magnet, or partial reluctor damage.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The cooling fan speed sensor sends the control module feedback about actual fan speed. P0527 sets when the signal is present and plausible but the reported speed does not track the commanded speed, which can point to sensor drift, a damaged speed target, or a fan assembly problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty or drifting fan speed sensor
- Damaged fan speed target or reluctor
- Loose, corroded, or damaged connector
- Cooling fan motor or fan assembly fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Cooling fan may run at an unexpected speed
- Engine may overheat, especially at low speeds or while idling
- Air conditioning may cool poorly at idle
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame and live data for commanded fan speed versus reported speed, noting when the mismatch occurs.
- Inspect the fan-speed sensor connector and harness for looseness, corrosion, damage, or movement that could affect the reading.
- Check the fan and its speed target or reluctor for visible damage, debris, or looseness, with the ignition off and the fan safely stopped.
- Command different fan speeds with a scan tool if supported, and observe whether reported speed follows the command consistently.
- Test the sensor signal and wiring, then the fan assembly, against the manufacturer's specification to identify whether the mismatch originates in the sensor, target, or motor.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded fan-speed sensor connector.
- Repair damaged wiring affecting the fan-speed feedback signal.
- Replace a drifting or faulty fan-speed sensor after confirming the target and circuit are sound.
- Repair or replace a damaged speed target or reluctor.
- Replace a faulty fan motor or assembly if it cannot achieve the commanded speed.
Can I keep driving?
Limit idling and slow, heavy-load driving if the fan runs at the wrong speed or the temperature rises. Stop safely if the engine overheats, since inadequate cooling can cause engine damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
