OBD-II fault code

P0522: Engine Oil Pressure Sensor/Switch Low

What it means

The oil pressure sensor signal is below the expected minimum. Often points to an electrical fault — short to ground or failed sensor — but can also indicate genuinely low oil pressure.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

Oil pressure sensor or switch A sends an electrical signal representing engine oil pressure to the control module. P0522 sets when that signal is lower than the expected circuit range, which can result from a short to ground or a failed sensor. It can also accompany genuinely low oil pressure, so the signal fault must not be assumed to be only electrical.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor failed (low)
  2. Signal shorted to ground

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light on
  • Oil-pressure warning light may illuminate
  • Oil-pressure gauge may read low or zero
  • Engine noise may occur if actual oil pressure is low

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and the live oil-pressure reading, and note whether the oil-pressure warning light or gauge also indicates low pressure.
  2. Check the oil level and inspect for leaks before running the engine further.
  3. Inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring for corrosion, damage, or a signal wire rubbed through to ground.
  4. Test the signal circuit for a short to ground and check sensor power and ground against the manufacturer’s specification.
  5. If the circuit passes or the warning and engine noise suggest a real pressure problem, verify actual oil pressure using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Top up the oil with the manufacturer-specified oil if the level is low, and locate any leak.
  • Repair a corroded connector or signal wire shorted to ground.
  • Replace oil pressure sensor or switch A if it fails circuit testing.
  • Repair the lubrication system if measured oil pressure is genuinely below the manufacturer’s specification.

Can I keep driving?

If the oil-pressure warning light is on, the gauge reads near zero, or the engine is noisy, stop the engine and do not drive until actual pressure is checked. Continuing with genuinely low oil pressure can cause rapid engine damage.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
