OBD-II fault code

P0513: Incorrect Immobilizer Key

What it means

The immobiliser system has detected a key that is not authorised for this vehicle. Engine start is blocked. Possible causes are an unprogrammed replacement key, a transponder fault, or a deliberate attempt to start with the wrong key.

How it works

The immobilizer checks whether the key's transponder is authorized for the vehicle before allowing the engine to start. P0513 sets when the system receives an unrecognized or unauthorized key code and blocks or interrupts starting.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Replacement key not programmed
  2. Key transponder defective

Symptoms

  • Security or immobilizer warning light on
  • Engine may crank but fail to start
  • Engine may start briefly and then stall
  • Starting may be refused with an unrecognized key

How to diagnose it

  1. Check the security warning and scan-tool immobilizer status while attempting to start with the key normally used.
  2. Try a known authorized spare key, if available, to determine whether the fault follows one key.
  3. Inspect the key for damage and check that no other transponder key or device is interfering near the ignition or start reader.
  4. Check the immobilizer reader and its connector for damage or looseness, following the vehicle's service information.
  5. If the authorized spare also fails, have the key authorization and immobilizer communication checked using the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Use a known authorized key if the current key is damaged or not recognized.
  • Replace a defective key transponder and have the replacement key programmed for the vehicle.
  • Repair a loose or damaged immobilizer reader connection.
  • Restore key authorization or immobilizer communication according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine is already running normally, this fault usually does not affect the current drive, but the vehicle may not restart once switched off. Avoid turning it off until you are somewhere safe if starting is unreliable.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
