What it means
A general circuit fault is detected on the idle air control valve - open or short on supply, signal or ground. The ECU loses control of idle bypass airflow.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
How it works
The idle air control valve regulates bypass air so the engine can maintain idle when the throttle is closed. P0511 sets when the control module detects an electrical fault in the valve circuit, such as an open or short that prevents reliable control of the valve.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty idle air control valve or actuator
- Open or short in the valve wiring
- Loose, corroded, or damaged connector
- Blown fuse or loss of power or ground
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Idle speed too high, too low, or unstable
- Possible stalling at idle or after cold start
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame data and live idle speed and IAC command data to note when the circuit fault occurs and whether idle changes with the command.
- With the ignition off, inspect the IAC valve connector and nearby harness for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or contact with hot or moving parts.
- Check the relevant fuse and verify the valve circuit's power and ground against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
- Test the IAC control wires for opens or shorts to ground or power, including terminal fit at the valve and control module.
- If power, ground, and wiring are sound, test the valve or actuator using the manufacturer's procedure and replace it if it fails.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a corroded or loose IAC connector.
- Repair an open or shorted wire in the IAC circuit.
- Restore a failed fuse, power feed, or ground after finding the underlying cause.
- Replace the idle air control valve or actuator if circuit tests identify it as faulty.
Can I keep driving?
Driving may be possible if the engine holds a steady idle, but it can stall when stopped or during a cold start. Avoid situations where a stall would be dangerous, and do not continue if idle speed becomes unpredictable.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
