OBD-II fault code

P048B: Exhaust Pressure Control Valve A Position Sensor/Switch Circuit

What it means

A general electrical fault on the position sensor of exhaust pressure control valve A.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The position sensor or switch reports the position of exhaust pressure control valve A to the control module. P048B sets when the module detects a general electrical fault in that sensor circuit, so it may not be able to confirm whether valve A moved as commanded.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failure
  2. Open or shorted sensor wiring
  3. Loose or corroded connector
  4. Fault in the valve or control circuit

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Reduced engine power or sluggish acceleration
  • Engine may take longer to warm up or have reduced performance
  • Exhaust braking may be reduced, if equipped

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame data and live valve A command and position feedback, if available, to see whether the position signal is absent or erratic.
  2. Locate the valve A position sensor using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, heat damage, or chafing.
  3. Check the sensor’s reference, ground, and signal circuits against the manufacturer’s wiring information and specification.
  4. Test the position-sensor circuit for opens or shorts with the circuit isolated as appropriate.
  5. If wiring and connections pass, test the valve A position sensor and associated control circuit using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure a loose or corroded valve A position-sensor connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring in the position-sensor circuit.
  • Replace the valve A position sensor if its signal fails the specified test.
  • Repair the valve actuator or control circuit if testing identifies a fault there.

Can I keep driving?

If the vehicle remains stable, drive gently and avoid towing or hard acceleration until the position fault is diagnosed. The control module may not manage exhaust pressure correctly, which can reduce performance or exhaust braking where fitted.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
