OBD-II fault code

P045B: EGR B Control Circuit Range/Performance

What it means

EGR valve B is electrically OK but does not respond as commanded — typically carbon buildup or sticking actuator.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

EGR control B operates a valve in the engine’s second exhaust-gas-recirculation path, where fitted. The module detects that the valve’s electrical circuit is functioning but its response or measured position does not follow the command within the expected range, which sets P045B.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Carbon buildup
  2. Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
  3. Sensor mounting loose - signal damping

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Pinging or knocking under load
  • Power loss and hesitation
  • Possible rough idle
  • Failed emissions inspection (NOx)

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and EGR live data to identify the conditions when control B failed to follow its command.
  2. Inspect the EGR B valve, its passages, and any position-sensor mounting for carbon deposits, looseness, or damage.
  3. Use a scan tool to command EGR B through its operating range, if supported, and watch whether the reported position or response changes smoothly.
  4. Check the valve connector and wiring for poor contact or intermittent signals while monitoring the live data.
  5. Test the EGR B actuator and position feedback using the manufacturer's procedure, comparing movement and signal behavior with its specification.
  6. If the actuator and wiring respond correctly, inspect the EGR B passages for restriction and verify the module's command using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure.

Common fixes

  • Clean carbon deposits from the EGR B valve and passages if the manufacturer's service procedure permits it.
  • Secure a loose EGR B position sensor or connector and repair poor terminal contact.
  • Replace an EGR B actuator or valve that sticks or fails its response test.
  • Replace a position sensor that is outside its calibration range after confirming its mounting and wiring are sound.

Can I keep driving?

Short trips at light load may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid heavy acceleration if it knocks or hesitates. Poor EGR response can increase NOx emissions and worsen drivability.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
