What it means
When the ECU commands secondary air injection, the actual flow measured by the front oxygen sensor (or a dedicated mass flow meter) does not match the expected value. Usually a partially blocked passage or a leaking combi valve.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The secondary air injection system uses a pump to send fresh air into the exhaust during cold starts, helping the catalytic converter warm up. The ECU compares the expected air response with changes reported by the front oxygen sensor or an air-flow meter. P0411 sets when the measured flow through the AIR system does not match the commanded flow.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Air passages in cylinder head clogged with carbon
- Air pump weak
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Failed emissions inspection
- Brief roughness during cold start
- Possible hesitation after cold start
How to diagnose it
- Use a scan tool to review freeze-frame data and check whether the code set during a cold-start AIR test, when the system should be operating.
- Inspect the AIR pump, hoses, check valve, and cylinder-head air passages for damage, leaks, or blockage that could restrict flow.
- Listen for the pump during a commanded test, if supported, and check its power supply and operation before suspecting a blocked passage.
- Check the combi or check valve for leaks, sticking, or failure to open when air is commanded.
- Compare front oxygen-sensor response or dedicated air-flow readings during an AIR test with the manufacturer's expected response.
- If the pump and valve work but flow remains low, inspect the cylinder-head air passages for carbon buildup.
Common fixes
- Repair a split or disconnected AIR hose.
- Replace a leaking or sticking combi/check valve.
- Repair the AIR pump power connection or replace a weak pump.
- Clear carbon blockage from the cylinder-head air passages.
Can I keep driving?
The vehicle is generally driveable if it runs normally, but the check-engine light may remain on and the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection. Avoid repeated cold-start trips if it hesitates or runs roughly, and address the fault before restricted passages or a failing pump lead to further damage.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
