OBD-II fault code

P0410: AIR System A

What it means

A general fault in the secondary air injection system. The system pumps fresh air into the exhaust during cold start to accelerate catalyst light-off; common faults are a seized pump, blocked passages or a stuck valve.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The secondary air injection system pumps fresh air into the exhaust, usually during cold starts, to help the catalytic converter warm up sooner. P0410 sets when the control module detects that the system's expected air injection is not occurring or is not producing the expected exhaust response.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Air pump seized (water ingress is a common cause)
  2. Combi valve stuck

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Failed emissions inspection
  • Brief roughness during cold start

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check whether the fault occurred during a cold start, when secondary air injection is usually commanded.
  2. Inspect the air pump, hoses, and electrical connector for water intrusion, damage, loose connections, or blocked air passages.
  3. Use a scan tool to command the AIR pump if supported, and listen or feel for pump operation while checking for a change in exhaust response.
  4. Check the combi valve for sticking and verify that air can pass through the system when commanded.
  5. Test the pump power, ground, control circuit, and system response against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose electrical connection or damaged AIR hose.
  • Clear a blocked secondary air passage.
  • Replace a seized AIR pump, particularly if water intrusion has damaged it.
  • Repair or replace a combi valve that is stuck and preventing airflow.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may be drivable if it runs normally, but arrange repair soon because cold-start emissions can rise and the vehicle may fail an emissions inspection. Stop if the fault is accompanied by severe rough running or other symptoms that make driving unsafe.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
