What it means
EGR temperature sensor A reads in range but plausibility check fails — slow response or stuck reading.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
EGR temperature sensor A measures exhaust gas temperature in the EGR path so the control module can check whether EGR operation is behaving plausibly. P040B sets when the reading is within the electrical range but responds too slowly or stays implausibly steady.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor drift
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Pinging or knocking under load
- Power loss and hesitation
- Possible rough idle
- Failed emissions inspection (NOx)
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare sensor A's live reading from a cold start through warm-up to see whether it changes when expected.
- Compare sensor A with other temperature readings and with the commanded EGR state to identify a delayed or stuck response.
- Inspect sensor A's mounting, connector, and wiring for looseness, corrosion, or damage that could damp or distort the signal.
- Check EGR flow and cooler operation for conditions that could prevent the expected temperature change.
- Test sensor A's response and circuit against the manufacturer's specification to distinguish sensor drift from an EGR flow issue.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose sensor A mounting or connector.
- Repair damaged sensor A wiring or connector terminals.
- Replace EGR temperature sensor A if it responds too slowly or remains stuck compared with the manufacturer's specification.
- Correct an EGR flow or cooler fault that prevents a plausible temperature change.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly, a short drive may be possible, but avoid heavy acceleration if knocking or hesitation occurs. The slow or implausible temperature feedback can impair EGR control, increase emissions, and worsen drivability.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
