What it means
Exhaust Gas Recirculation Sensor "B" Circuit High: the signal voltage is above the expected range. Without valid EGR feedback the ECU disables exhaust gas recirculation and may set further EGR codes.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The EGR system sends exhaust back through the intake to help reduce combustion temperatures and emissions. P0409 identifies an electrical fault in the EGR sensor A circuit; it does not by itself specify whether the signal is low or high.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor circuit shorted to supply
- EGR position sensor B failed
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Rough idle or hesitation
- Reduced engine performance
- Increased emissions
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan live EGR sensor A readings to see whether the signal is missing, erratic, or fixed during commanded EGR operation.
- Find sensor A using the vehicle's wiring information, then inspect its connector and harness for corrosion, loose pins, damage, or a short to power or ground.
- Check sensor A's reference, ground, and signal circuits for continuity and unintended shorts using the wiring diagram.
- If the circuit checks pass, test sensor A's response during an EGR command and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- Check for related EGR codes and verify the repair by clearing codes and confirming sensor A responds normally.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure a loose or corroded sensor A connector.
- Repair an open, shorted, or damaged sensor A circuit.
- Replace EGR sensor A if its signal fails the manufacturer's specification.
Can I keep driving?
If there is no rough running or power loss, a short drive may be possible, but avoid heavy loads if the engine hesitates or knocks. EGR feedback faults can increase emissions and affect drivability; stop if symptoms make the vehicle unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
