OBD-II fault code

P02DC: Cylinder 9 Fuel Injector A Offset Learning At Min Limit

What it means

The learned fuel-injector offset for cylinder 9 has reached its minimum limit. The code does not by itself establish whether the injector is over-delivering or identify the cause.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Cylinder 9’s fuel injector A delivers fuel when the engine control module commands it, while the module learns an offset to account for the injector’s response. This code sets when the learned offset for cylinder 9 reaches its minimum allowed limit; it does not establish whether the injector is delivering too much fuel or why the limit was reached.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Injector offset adaptation at its minimum limit
  2. Injector flow or response outside the learned range
  3. Injector wiring or driver fault
  4. Fuel pressure or delivery problem

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Misfire or rough idle on the affected cylinder
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible fuel smell or smoke from exhaust

How to diagnose it

  1. Record freeze-frame data and check cylinder 9 misfire counts and injector offset data to see when the minimum limit was reached.
  2. Inspect injector A’s cylinder 9 connector and wiring for loose pins, corrosion, damage, or signs of fuel leakage.
  3. Compare cylinder 9’s injector command and available cylinder balance or contribution data with other cylinders using a capable scan tool.
  4. Check fuel pressure and delivery against the manufacturer’s specification, since a system-wide supply issue can affect injector learning.
  5. If wiring and fuel supply check out, test injector A’s electrical operation and flow or response using the manufacturer’s procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged cylinder 9 injector connector or wire.
  • Correct a fuel pressure or delivery problem found during testing.
  • Clean or repair injector A’s electrical connections if contact is poor.
  • Replace injector A if testing confirms its flow or response is outside the manufacturer’s specification.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and the warning light is steady, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon because excess fuel use and emissions may increase. Stop driving if it misfires severely, stalls, or produces a strong fuel smell or heavy exhaust smoke.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
