What it means
Cylinder 4 fuel trim has reached its minimum calibrated limit. The code indicates that the control module cannot apply the required correction; it does not by itself prove the cylinder is structurally rich.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The engine control module adjusts fuel for cylinder 4 to keep combustion within its calibrated range. P02A7 sets when cylinder 4’s fuel-trim correction reaches its minimum limit, so the module cannot make enough of the required adjustment; the code alone does not prove the cylinder is rich.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Injector leaking on cylinder 4
- Injector stuck open or control fault
- Excess fuel pressure
- Cylinder 4 sensor or wiring fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough idle or engine vibration
- Misfire or hesitation
- Fuel odor or increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and compare live cylinder 4 misfire and fuel-trim readings to see when the minimum limit is reached.
- Inspect cylinder 4’s injector and surrounding area for fuel leakage, and check its connector and wiring for damage.
- Check for related fuel-pressure or mixture codes that could indicate a broader problem rather than one cylinder.
- Test fuel pressure against the manufacturer’s specification and check whether cylinder 4’s injector is being commanded correctly.
- Use the maker’s approved procedure to test cylinder 4 injector leakage and inspect its sensor or control circuit if needed.
Common fixes
- Repair a damaged cylinder 4 injector connector or control wire.
- Replace a leaking seal or correctly reseat cylinder 4’s injector if the leak is external.
- Replace cylinder 4’s injector if its nozzle or internal valve leaks or it is stuck open.
- Correct fuel pressure if it exceeds the manufacturer’s specification.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid extended driving if cylinder 4 runs rough, misfires, or the exhaust smells of fuel; excess fuel can damage the catalytic converter. Stop if you see fuel leaking around the injector because of the fire risk.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
