What it means
The control module detected restricted fuel flow through the cylinder 1 injector. The code identifies a flow restriction, but does not specify its cause.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The control module assesses fuel delivery through cylinder 1’s injector using engine-running data and, where available, injector diagnostics. P029C sets when it detects restricted flow at that injector, which may come from contamination, a blocked supply path, or an electrical or control problem.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Injector nozzle clogged or contaminated
- Restricted fuel supply to injector
- Injector electrical or control fault
- Fuel contamination
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough idle or engine vibration
- Misfire or hesitation
- Reduced engine power
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data, cylinder 1 misfire counts, and related fuel-pressure or injector codes to establish when the restriction appears.
- Inspect the cylinder 1 injector connector and wiring, then check for visible damage or a kinked or restricted fuel-supply path.
- Compare cylinder 1 injector operation or contribution with the other cylinders using scan-tool data or the manufacturer’s test procedure.
- Check fuel quality and system pressure or delivery against the manufacturer’s specification before condemning the injector.
- Test the cylinder 1 injector’s electrical command and flow using the manufacturer’s procedure to distinguish restriction from a circuit fault.
Common fixes
- Repair damaged cylinder 1 injector wiring or connector.
- Correct a restricted fuel supply or contaminated fuel source identified during inspection.
- Clean the cylinder 1 injector if the manufacturer’s procedure permits it and testing supports deposits as the cause.
- Replace the cylinder 1 injector if flow testing confirms that it remains restricted.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle drive may be possible if the engine runs smoothly, but avoid heavy acceleration if it hesitates or misfires. Continued poor fueling can increase emissions and damage the catalytic converter.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
