OBD-II fault code

P0282: Cylinder 8 Injector Circuit Low

What it means

The control module detects a low condition in the cylinder 8 injector circuit. This indicates an electrical circuit fault and does not by itself establish an injector flow problem.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The cylinder 8 injector circuit carries the control module’s command to meter fuel into cylinder 8. The module monitors the circuit’s electrical response and sets this code when it detects a low condition, which points to an electrical fault rather than proving that the injector is clogged.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light
  • Rough idle or misfire
  • Reduced power
  • Increased fuel consumption

How to diagnose it

  1. Save the freeze-frame data and check live data for cylinder 8 misfire or injector circuit indications to see when the fault occurs.
  2. With the engine off, inspect the cylinder 8 injector connector and nearby harness for corrosion, loose or backed-out pins, damaged insulation, or chafing against ground.
  3. Check the cylinder 8 injector circuit for a short to ground using the manufacturer's wiring diagram and test procedure.
  4. Test circuit continuity and connector contact quality between the cylinder 8 injector and control module, comparing results with the manufacturer's specification.
  5. If wiring and connectors pass, test the cylinder 8 injector and its control circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure before considering a module fault.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed cylinder 8 injector wiring and insulate or secure it away from the grounding point.
  • Clean or replace corroded cylinder 8 injector connector terminals and ensure the pins are seated correctly.
  • Repair an open or damaged section of the cylinder 8 injector circuit.
  • Replace the cylinder 8 injector if testing confirms an electrical fault within it.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs smoothly and the warning light is steady, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon; cylinder 8 may misfire and increase emissions and fuel use. Avoid hard acceleration, and stop driving if the light flashes, power drops sharply, or the engine runs very roughly.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
