What it means
The control module detects a low condition in the cylinder 6 injector circuit. This indicates an electrical circuit fault and does not by itself establish an injector flow problem.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The engine control module controls the fuel injector circuit for cylinder 6 to deliver fuel to that cylinder. P0276 indicates a low electrical condition in that circuit, which may come from a short to ground, corroded connector pins, or chafed wiring; it does not by itself prove a flow restriction.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough idle or misfire
- Reduced power
- Increased fuel consumption
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check cylinder 6 misfire counts and available injector data to see whether the low condition coincides with a misfire.
- With the ignition off, inspect the cylinder 6 injector connector and harness for corrosion, loose terminals, or insulation worn through by chafing.
- Check the cylinder 6 injector circuit for a short to ground or open using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's procedure.
- Test the injector winding and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the injector and wiring pass, test the control module's cylinder 6 driver and connections.
Common fixes
- Repair chafed cylinder 6 injector wiring and restore its insulation and routing.
- Clean and secure the connector or replace corroded terminals.
- Repair an open or short to ground in the cylinder 6 injector circuit.
- Replace the cylinder 6 injector if it fails the manufacturer's electrical test.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine misfires, avoid heavy loads and long trips because unburned fuel can damage the catalytic converter. Stop if it runs severely rough or loses enough power to make driving unsafe.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
