What it means
The PCM detected a problem with injection timing for cylinder 4. The precise monitoring method and cause depend on the engine and injection system.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The fuel-injection system meters fuel to cylinder 4, and the PCM monitors the timing or response of that cylinder’s injection using methods that vary by engine. P020D sets when the PCM detects that cylinder 4 injection timing is outside the expected behavior; it does not identify the failed part by itself.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Injector response or fuel delivery problem
- Injector wiring or connector fault
- Fuel pressure outside the expected range
- Mechanical or control issue affecting injection timing
Symptoms
- Check-engine light
- Rough running or misfire
- Hard starting
- Reduced power or fuel economy
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related injector, fuel-pressure, timing, or misfire codes to see when cylinder 4’s injection problem occurs.
- Compare cylinder 4 misfire and injector-related live data with the other cylinders, especially during the operating conditions shown in the freeze frame.
- Inspect the cylinder 4 injector connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, damaged insulation, or contact with hot or moving parts.
- Check fuel pressure and any available injection timing or injector response data against the manufacturer's specification.
- Test the cylinder 4 injector and its control circuit using the vehicle's wiring information and manufacturer procedures.
- If the injector and circuit pass, investigate engine mechanical or control issues that could affect cylinder 4 injection timing.
Common fixes
- Repair a loose, corroded, or damaged cylinder 4 injector connector or wire.
- Correct a fuel supply or pressure problem found during testing.
- Replace the cylinder 4 injector if its response or operation fails the specified test.
- Repair a verified mechanical or injection-control fault affecting cylinder 4 timing.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs smoothly and the warning light is steady, limit driving and arrange diagnosis soon. Avoid heavy loads if it misfires or loses power; continued misfiring can damage the catalytic converter.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
