What it means
The PCM detected a problem with injection timing for cylinder 11. The precise monitoring method and cause depend on the engine and injection system.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The PCM monitors cylinder 11’s injector timing or response using signals available in that engine’s fuel system. It sets P021E when the timing or response attributed to cylinder 11 fails the system’s diagnostic criteria; the exact method depends on the engine and injection design.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Injector timing or response fault
- Injector wiring or connector fault
- Fuel injector fault
Symptoms
- Check-engine light on
- Rough running or misfire
- Reduced engine power
- Hard starting
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and check for related injector, fuel-pressure, or misfire codes to see when cylinder 11’s timing fault occurred.
- Compare cylinder 11’s live injector timing or response data with other cylinders under the same conditions, if the scan tool provides it.
- Inspect cylinder 11’s injector connector and wiring for looseness, corrosion, chafing, or damage.
- Check the cylinder 11 injector circuit for power, ground, continuity, and shorts using the vehicle’s wiring diagram and manufacturer’s specification.
- Test cylinder 11’s injector operation and compare it with the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure before replacing parts.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or repair a loose, corroded, or damaged cylinder 11 injector connector.
- Repair damaged cylinder 11 injector wiring or a circuit fault.
- Replace a faulty cylinder 11 fuel injector if testing confirms it.
- Address any related fuel-system or control fault identified during diagnosis.
Can I keep driving?
If the engine runs roughly, misfires, is hard to start, or has reduced power, avoid heavy loads and long trips; stop if it runs severely rough. Continued misfiring can worsen engine damage and increase emissions.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
