What it means
Rail pressure on bank 2 fails to reach the start threshold during cranking. Hard or no-start.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
During cranking, the control module checks whether fuel rail pressure on bank 2 reaches the threshold needed for starting. This code sets when pressure does not reach that threshold, which can result from a supply or regulation fault or an inaccurate bank 2 pressure signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Fuel supply or pressure regulation problem
- Fuel rail pressure sensor or circuit fault
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Long cranking time
- Hard starting or no start
- Rough running just after starting
How to diagnose it
- Use freeze-frame and live data during cranking to see whether reported bank 2 pressure rises toward the start threshold.
- Check battery condition and cranking speed if available, since weak cranking can affect how the engine and its fuel system behave during starting.
- Inspect the bank 2 pressure sensor connector and wiring for corrosion, loose terminals, or damage that could produce a false low reading.
- Test actual fuel pressure during cranking using the manufacturer's specified method and compare it with the required starting pressure.
- If actual pressure is adequate, test the bank 2 pressure sensor circuit; if it is low, check fuel supply and regulation using the manufacturer's procedures.
Common fixes
- Reconnect or clean a poor bank 2 pressure sensor connection.
- Repair damaged wiring in the bank 2 pressure sensor circuit.
- Correct a confirmed fuel supply restriction or delivery fault.
- Repair a confirmed pressure regulation problem.
- Replace the bank 2 pressure sensor if it fails the manufacturer's checks.
Can I keep driving?
The engine may take a long time to start, stall shortly after starting, or fail to start at all. Avoid relying on the vehicle for essential trips until it starts consistently, and do not keep cranking for long periods if it will not start.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
