OBD-II fault code

P019B: O2 Sensor Delayed Response - Lean to Rich Bank 1 Sensor 3

What it means

Bank 1 sensor 3 O2 sensor reacts only after delay during lean-to-rich transitions. A drifted or sluggish lambda sensor lets the mixture run lean or rich without correction — fuel economy and emissions suffer immediately.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 1 Sensor 3 is an exhaust oxygen sensor that sends oxygen-content feedback to the control module. P019B sets when it responds too slowly during a lean-to-rich transition, delaying the module's confirmation that the exhaust mixture has become richer.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Aging or sluggish O2 sensor
  2. Exhaust leak near the sensor
  3. Wiring or connector fault
  4. Contamination of the sensor

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live oxygen-sensor data to verify that Bank 1 Sensor 3 is slow specifically during a lean-to-rich transition.
  2. Locate Bank 1 Sensor 3 using vehicle service information and inspect its connector and wiring for corrosion, heat damage, or loose contact.
  3. Check the exhaust around Bank 1 Sensor 3 for leaks that could alter the sensor's reading.
  4. Run the manufacturer's lean-to-rich response test while monitoring the sensor and compare its response with specification.
  5. If the exhaust and circuit pass inspection, check for sensor contamination and test or replace Bank 1 Sensor 3 following the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair an exhaust leak near Bank 1 Sensor 3.
  • Repair damaged wiring or poor contact at the sensor connector.
  • Address the source of sensor contamination if found.
  • Replace Bank 1 Sensor 3 if it remains slow during the lean-to-rich test with a sound exhaust and circuit.

Can I keep driving?

If the engine runs normally, gentle short trips are generally reasonable, but the delayed feedback can increase fuel use and emissions. Avoid continued driving if hesitation or rough running becomes significant.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
