OBD-II fault code

P0199: Engine Oil Temperature Sensor Intermittent

What it means

The ECU detects intermittent dropouts on the engine oil temperature sensor circuit. Loose connector, chafed wiring or sensor failing thermally.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light

How it works

The engine oil temperature sensor reports oil temperature to the control module through an electrical circuit. P0199 sets when that signal intermittently drops out or fluctuates, often as a loose connection or damaged wire loses contact with vibration or temperature changes.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Connector loose
  2. Wiring chafed
  3. Connector with intermittent contact under vibration

Symptoms

  • Check-engine light may come on intermittently
  • Oil temperature reading may fluctuate or drop out

How to diagnose it

  1. Review freeze-frame and fault history for engine temperature and operating conditions when the oil-temperature signal dropped out.
  2. Inspect the sensor connector for a loose latch, corrosion, damaged pins, or oil contamination that could interrupt contact.
  3. Follow the oil-temperature sensor wiring and check for chafing, stretched sections, or heat damage.
  4. Monitor live oil-temperature data while gently moving the connector and harness to look for signal fluctuations.
  5. If the circuit remains stable during a wiggle check, observe the reading during warm-up and test the sensor under the conditions associated with the fault.

Common fixes

  • Secure the loose oil-temperature sensor connector and clean or repair its terminals.
  • Repair chafed or intermittently open wiring in the sensor circuit.
  • Correct poor terminal tension or a connector that loses contact with vibration.
  • Replace the engine oil temperature sensor if its signal drops out despite stable wiring.

Can I keep driving?

A fluctuating reading can prevent reliable monitoring of oil temperature. If an oil-temperature warning appears or the engine seems unusually hot, stop safely; otherwise avoid heavy loads and arrange diagnosis soon.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
