OBD-II fault code

P0166: O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity / Slow Response (Bank 2 Sensor 3)

What it means

The ECU detects no switching or too slow a response from the third O2 sensor on bank 2. Typically aged or poisoned sensor or weak heater.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

Bank 2 Sensor 3 is the third oxygen sensor in the bank 2 exhaust path on vehicles that have one. The ECU monitors its signal for activity and response; P0166 sets if it stays inactive or reacts too slowly during the relevant monitor conditions.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor aged or poisoned
  2. Heater circuit weak

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live data to confirm whether Bank 2 Sensor 3 is inactive or slow when the monitor runs.
  2. Verify that the vehicle has a Bank 2 Sensor 3 and inspect its connector and exhaust-area wiring for damage or corrosion.
  3. Check for exhaust leaks near the sensor that could affect its reading.
  4. Test the sensor heater circuit and confirm the sensor warms as expected.
  5. Compare the signal with other oxygen-sensor readings and test Bank 2 Sensor 3's circuit against the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Repair a damaged or loose Bank 2 Sensor 3 connector or wire.
  • Repair an exhaust leak near the sensor.
  • Repair a weak or failed heater circuit.
  • Replace Bank 2 Sensor 3 if its signal remains inactive or slow after circuit and exhaust checks.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle is often driveable, but the code can leave emissions monitoring incomplete and may affect fuel use. Avoid extended driving if it runs poorly, and arrange repair before an emissions inspection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
