OBD-II fault code

P0134: O2 Sensor Circuit No Activity Detected (Bank 1, Sensor 1)

What it means

The module detects no activity from the upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1 under the monitored conditions.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The upstream oxygen sensor, Bank 1 Sensor 1, measures oxygen in exhaust before it reaches the catalytic converter. The control module checks for sensor activity under conditions when the sensor should be operating. P0134 sets when it detects no meaningful signal activity, which can result from a failed or poisoned sensor, weak heater operation, or an exhaust leak affecting the reading.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Sensor aged or poisoned (silicone, lead, coolant)
  2. Sensor heater circuit weak
  3. Exhaust leak upstream of sensor diluting reading

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased fuel consumption
  • Possible rough idle or hesitation
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and review live Bank 1 Sensor 1 data to confirm that the signal remains inactive under the recorded operating conditions.
  2. Inspect the Bank 1 Sensor 1 connector and wiring for disconnection, corrosion, heat damage, or an open circuit.
  3. Check for an exhaust leak ahead of the sensor that could affect its reading.
  4. Test the sensor heater circuit and its supply, ground, and signal wiring against the wiring diagram and manufacturer's specification.
  5. If the wiring, heater circuit, and exhaust are sound, test the sensor for contamination or failure and replace it if it produces no activity.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose Bank 1 Sensor 1 connector.
  • Repair damaged wiring or a fault in the sensor heater circuit.
  • Repair an exhaust leak upstream of the sensor.
  • Replace Bank 1 Sensor 1 if testing confirms no signal activity despite a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

With only the check-engine light reported, cautious driving may be possible, but limit driving if the engine runs rough or fuel use increases. Without an active upstream oxygen signal, fuel correction and emissions control may be less effective.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
