What it means
The turbocharger or supercharger bypass valve control circuit is reporting voltage below the expected range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the check-engine light
- Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test
How it works
The turbocharger bypass valve control circuit operates the valve that routes air around the compressor to manage boost. P0034 is set when the module sees voltage below the expected range in that circuit, which may indicate a control wire grounded, a shorted solenoid, or excessive resistance at the connector.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Solenoid internal short
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
Symptoms
- Check engine light on
- Reduced engine performance
How to diagnose it
- Record freeze-frame data and scan for other boost-control or low-voltage circuit codes.
- Inspect the turbo bypass valve connector and nearby wiring for chafing, heat damage, moisture, or corrosion that could lower circuit voltage.
- Check the relevant fuse and connector fit, then verify the circuit routing against the wiring diagram.
- Test the control wire for a short to ground and inspect for excessive resistance or poor connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If the harness passes, test the bypass solenoid or actuator and module control to locate the low-voltage cause.
Common fixes
- Reconnect the bypass valve connector and secure its wiring.
- Repair a control wire shorted to ground or damaged by heat.
- Clean or replace corroded connector terminals.
- Replace the bypass solenoid or actuator if it is internally shorted.
- Repair a confirmed module fault after excluding wiring and actuator problems.
Can I keep driving?
A short, gentle drive may be possible if the vehicle remains predictable, but avoid boost-heavy acceleration and towing because engine performance may be limited. Stop if power drops suddenly or the engine runs abnormally.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
