OBD-II fault code

P0032: HO2S Heater Control Circuit High (Bank 1 Sensor 1)

What it means

The heater control circuit for the Bank 1 Sensor 1 heated oxygen sensor is reporting voltage above the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the check-engine light
  • Affects emissions; the car can fail an emissions test

How it works

The upstream oxygen sensor on bank 1, sensor 1, has a heater circuit that warms the sensor after startup. P0032 means the module detects voltage above the expected range in that heater control circuit, which can occur if the control wire contacts a power supply or the circuit has an open or poor connection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Heater wire shorted to supply voltage
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • Check engine light on
  • Increased emissions
  • Reduced fuel economy
  • Failed emissions test

How to diagnose it

  1. Save freeze-frame data and check for related heater codes to confirm whether the issue is confined to bank 1 sensor 1.
  2. Inspect the upstream sensor's connector and heat-exposed harness for a pinched wire, damaged insulation, corrosion, or an unplugged connection.
  3. Check the heater fuse and connector terminals, then compare the circuit routing with the vehicle wiring diagram.
  4. Test the control wire for a short to battery voltage and check for an open circuit using the manufacturer's procedure.
  5. If the wiring checks out, test the oxygen sensor heater and module control to locate the source of the high reading.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire pinched against a power source or damaged by heat.
  • Reconnect the bank 1 sensor 1 heater plug and secure the harness.
  • Replace corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace the upstream bank 1 oxygen sensor if its heater circuit is open internally.
  • Repair a confirmed module control fault after ruling out wiring and sensor faults.

Can I keep driving?

You can usually drive if the engine runs normally, but cold-start emissions may increase and fuel economy may fall. Have the heater circuit repaired soon, particularly before an emissions inspection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
