OBD-II fault code

C061E: Variable Effort Steering Actuator Control Circuit High

What it means

VES actuator control voltage above expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The variable effort steering actuator uses a controlled electrical circuit to adjust steering assistance. C061E sets when its control circuit voltage is above the expected range, which can occur if the wire is shorted to battery positive or the connector has a fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring shorted to battery
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Supply wire pinched against B+ source

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan steering and chassis modules and review freeze-frame voltage and related codes to establish when the high reading occurred.
  2. Inspect the actuator connector and harness for insulation damage, pinching against a B+ wire, moisture, corrosion, or backed-out terminals.
  3. Monitor the actuator circuit data while gently moving the harness to check for a voltage change that reveals an intermittent short.
  4. Test the control wire for an unintended connection to battery positive and check connector contact using the manufacturer's wiring information.
  5. If wiring and terminals are sound, test the actuator and module output according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair a control wire pinched against or shorted to a B+ source.
  • Restore sound connector contact by repairing corroded or damaged terminals.
  • Replace damaged actuator harness sections that cannot be properly repaired.
  • Repair or replace the actuator or control module if tests confirm an internal fault.

Can I keep driving?

Steering assistance may not respond as intended, and stability control may be unavailable. Drive cautiously, avoid high speeds, and stop safely if steering effort becomes abnormal.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
