OBD-II fault code

C061C: Variable Effort Steering Actuator Control Circuit/Open

What it means

Open circuit on variable effort steering (VES) actuator. VES varies steering assist with vehicle speed.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The variable effort steering actuator changes steering assistance according to vehicle conditions such as speed. C061C sets when the control module detects an open circuit in the actuator control path, so it cannot reliably command the actuator.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Wiring break
  2. Pin pushed back out of connector body
  3. Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the steering, ABS, and stability modules and save freeze-frame data to see when the actuator circuit fault occurred.
  2. Inspect the variable effort steering actuator connector and harness for a broken wire, disconnected plug, backed-out pin, or damage near the steering mechanism.
  3. Check connector terminal fit and continuity through the actuator control circuit using the manufacturer's wiring information and test procedure.
  4. Monitor the circuit while gently moving the harness to find an intermittent open, taking care around moving steering parts.
  5. If the wiring and connections test sound, follow the manufacturer's procedure to assess the actuator and control module for an internal open.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect a loose variable effort steering actuator connector.
  • Repair a broken or chafed actuator control wire.
  • Restore proper terminal fit or replace a damaged connector.
  • Repair or replace the actuator or module if testing confirms an internal open.

Can I keep driving?

Steering assistance may not vary as intended, and stability functions may also be limited. If steering effort changes unexpectedly, slow down and stop safely; have the steering system checked before continuing.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
