What it means
4WD/AWD Clutch A Position Sensor Circuit Low: the signal voltage is below the expected range. This affects engagement of the all-wheel-drive clutch.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch A's position sensor sends a signal showing clutch actuator position to the 4WD/AWD control module. The module sets this code when that signal voltage falls below the expected range, which can make clutch position unreadable and limit AWD.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Signal wire shorted to ground
- Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
- Harness chafing through insulation
Symptoms
- 4WD/AWD operation may be limited or disabled
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and live Clutch A position to confirm that the sensor signal was low when the fault set.
- Inspect the sensor signal wire and connector for chafing, corrosion, loose pins, or contact with ground.
- Check sensor power and ground connections, then test the signal circuit for a short to ground using the wiring diagram.
- Measure sensor signal voltage and circuit continuity against the manufacturer's specification.
- If the wiring passes, test the position sensor and control-module input using the manufacturer's procedure.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure corroded or loose position-sensor connector pins.
- Repair chafed signal wiring or a short to ground.
- Replace damaged sensor connector terminals or harness sections.
- Replace a confirmed faulty position sensor or repair a confirmed control-module input fault.
Can I keep driving?
4WD/AWD may be limited or disabled because the module cannot reliably read Clutch A position. Avoid relying on AWD for slippery or difficult conditions, and stop if driveline behavior becomes abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
