What it means
The AWD clutch A position sensor signal is outside the expected range or does not agree with expected operation.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch A's position sensor tells the 4WD/AWD control module how far the clutch actuator has moved. This range/performance code sets when the signal is plausible electrically but drifts outside the calibrated range or fails to track the expected clutch movement.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Sensor reading drifted
- Sensor element aged beyond calibration window
- Sensor mounting loose - signal damping
Symptoms
- 4WD/AWD operation may be limited or disabled
How to diagnose it
- Compare freeze-frame data and live Clutch A position with the commanded position to identify when the reading diverges.
- Inspect the sensor mounting and connector for looseness, corrosion, or movement that could alter the reading.
- Check the sensor harness for chafing or intermittent connections while observing live position data.
- Test whether the position signal changes smoothly through actuator movement and compare it with the manufacturer's specification.
- If the mounting and circuit pass, check sensor calibration or replace a sensor that has drifted beyond its specified range.
Common fixes
- Secure a loose Clutch A position sensor and its connector.
- Repair an intermittent or chafed sensor harness.
- Calibrate the sensor using the vehicle's specified procedure, if supported.
- Replace a position sensor confirmed to drift outside the manufacturer's range.
Can I keep driving?
4WD/AWD may be limited or disabled if the module cannot trust the clutch position reading. Avoid relying on AWD in demanding conditions until the signal tracks correctly.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
