What it means
4WD/AWD Clutch A Temperature Too High: the component is overheating, typically from extended load or slip. This affects engagement of the all-wheel-drive clutch.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
Clutch A transfers drive through the 4WD/AWD system, and heat builds when the clutch slips or works under sustained load. The control module sets this code when the reported or calculated clutch temperature exceeds its allowed limit, and may reduce or disable AWD to protect the clutch.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Prolonged clutch slip under heavy load
- Repeated high-load 4WD/AWD use causing heat buildup
- Low or degraded clutch fluid, where applicable
- Clutch actuator or temperature sensor fault
Symptoms
- 4WD/AWD may be limited or disabled
How to diagnose it
- Review freeze-frame data and live 4WD/AWD temperature readings to determine whether the temperature rose during sustained load or continued to read high after cooling.
- Check for recent heavy towing, repeated high-load AWD use, or prolonged wheelspin that could have overheated Clutch A.
- Inspect the clutch assembly and actuator area for leaks, damage, or signs of overheating.
- Where the design uses clutch fluid, check its level and condition using the manufacturer's procedure.
- If temperature readings remain implausible after cooling, test the Clutch A temperature sensor, actuator, and wiring against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Allow the clutch to cool and avoid sustained high-load 4WD/AWD use while investigating the cause.
- Correct a clutch-fluid level or condition problem where the system uses serviceable fluid.
- Repair wiring or replace a confirmed faulty Clutch A temperature sensor.
- Repair or replace a confirmed faulty actuator or worn clutch components.
Can I keep driving?
Avoid towing, prolonged wheelspin, and demanding 4WD/AWD use until the clutch cools and the fault is checked; AWD may be limited or disabled. Continued overheating can damage the clutch, so stop if the warning persists or driveline behavior becomes abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
