What it means
The ABS control module monitors its system voltage. It sets this code when voltage falls below the module’s expected operating range.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
- The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode
How it works
The ABS control module needs a stable electrical supply to operate anti-lock braking and related stability functions. This code sets when the voltage reaching the module falls below its expected operating range, which can cause those functions to be limited.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Weak or discharged battery
- Charging system undercharging
- High resistance in power or ground connections
- Damaged wiring or fuse connection
Symptoms
- ABS warning light
- ABS may be unavailable or limited
- Stability-control functions may be limited
How to diagnose it
- Read ABS freeze-frame data and note whether the low-voltage event occurred during starting, charging, or operation.
- Check battery condition and connections for a discharged battery, loose terminals, or corrosion.
- Measure charging-system output under the conditions specified by the manufacturer to check for undercharging.
- Inspect ABS fuses, power feeds, grounds, and connectors for damage or high-resistance connections.
- If the battery and charging system are sound, test voltage drop across the ABS module's power and ground circuits against the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Charge or replace a weak battery after confirming its condition.
- Clean and tighten battery and ABS module power or ground connections.
- Repair a damaged fuse connection or high-resistance power or ground wire.
- Repair the charging system if testing confirms it is undercharging.
Can I keep driving?
ABS and stability-control assistance may be unavailable, though conventional braking may still work. Avoid hard braking and slippery conditions, and address the low supply promptly because repeated voltage drops can disrupt other modules too.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
