OBD-II fault code

C054B: Vacuum Sensor A Circuit Low

What it means

Vacuum sensor A signal voltage below expected range. Wiring faults of this kind typically come from chafing, water ingress at connector seals, or pin push-back — a wiggle test on the harness while the code is active often confirms the location.

How it works

Vacuum sensor A sends its signal to the control module, which uses it to assess vacuum available for brake assist. This code sets when sensor A's signal voltage falls below the expected range, often due to a signal wire shorted to ground or damaged wiring.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Connector pins corroded - high contact resistance
  3. Harness chafing through insulation

Symptoms

  • Brake or stability-control warning light on
  • Brake assist may be affected

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the brake or stability module and record freeze-frame and live data for vacuum sensor A to confirm the low signal condition.
  2. Inspect sensor A's connector and harness for chafing, water intrusion, corrosion, pushed-back pins, or exposed wire touching ground.
  3. With the code active, gently move the sensor A harness while watching the reading for an intermittent change.
  4. Use the vehicle wiring information to test the sensor A signal circuit for a short to ground and check connector contact condition.
  5. If the circuit checks out, test sensor A and the module input according to the manufacturer's procedure.

Common fixes

  • Repair chafed sensor A signal wiring that is contacting ground.
  • Clean or repair corroded, loose, or pushed-back connector terminals.
  • Restore a damaged signal wire connection or harness section.
  • Replace vacuum sensor A if its output remains low with a sound circuit.

Can I keep driving?

Brake assist may be affected, which can make the pedal harder to press and increase stopping distance. Drive cautiously, avoid demanding stops where possible, and stop safely if braking effort rises noticeably.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
