What it means
The module detects an intermittent left-rear wheel-speed sensor signal. This indicates an unstable signal, but does not by itself identify the failed component.
How it works
The ABS module uses the left-rear wheel-speed sensor to track that wheel’s rotation for anti-lock braking and related stability functions. It sets C0510 when the left-rear signal drops out or changes unpredictably, even if the signal works again afterward.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Loose or corroded connector
- Damaged or chafed wiring
- Failing wheel-speed sensor
- Damaged tone ring or encoder
Symptoms
- ABS warning light
- Traction or stability control warning
- ABS or stability functions disabled
How to diagnose it
- Check the ABS module’s freeze-frame data and compare live left-rear speed with the other wheels at low speed to see when the signal cuts out.
- Inspect the left-rear sensor connector for looseness, corrosion, water, or damaged pins.
- Follow the left-rear sensor wiring and look for chafing, stretching, or damage near the suspension and wheel.
- With the vehicle safely raised, rotate the left-rear wheel while monitoring its live speed signal and gently move the harness to check for dropouts.
- Inspect the left-rear tone ring or encoder for cracks, contamination, missing teeth, or damage, then test the sensor circuit against the manufacturer’s specification.
Common fixes
- Reconnect and clean the left-rear sensor connector, or repair damaged connector terminals.
- Repair chafed or broken wiring in the left-rear sensor circuit.
- Replace a faulty left-rear wheel-speed sensor.
- Repair or replace a damaged left-rear tone ring or encoder.
Can I keep driving?
Normal braking may remain available, but ABS and stability functions can be reduced or disabled while the signal is unreliable. Drive cautiously, leave extra stopping distance, and avoid slippery roads until the fault is repaired.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
