OBD-II fault code

C050E: Left Rear Wheel Speed Sensor Circuit Low

What it means

The module detects a left-rear wheel-speed sensor signal below the expected range. This indicates an electrical signal fault; the code alone does not establish that other vehicle functions are disabled.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

The ABS module monitors the electrical signal from the left-rear wheel-speed sensor as it reports wheel rotation. This code sets when that signal is lower than the module's expected range, which can result from a signal wire shorted to ground or a sensor fault.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Signal wire shorted to ground
  2. Damaged wiring or connector
  3. Faulty wheel-speed sensor

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame data and live wheel-speed readings to confirm whether the left-rear signal is low or absent compared with the other wheels.
  2. Inspect the left-rear sensor connector and wiring for crushed insulation, corrosion, loose terminals, or contact with ground.
  3. Check the left-rear sensor mounting and tone ring or encoder for damage or debris that could affect the reading.
  4. Measure the left-rear sensor circuit for an unintended short to ground and check for opens or poor connections.
  5. Test the left-rear sensor and circuit against the manufacturer's specification before replacing parts.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the left-rear sensor connector.
  • Repair wiring shorted to ground or damaged insulation in the left-rear circuit.
  • Replace damaged left-rear connector terminals.
  • Replace a faulty left-rear wheel-speed sensor.
  • Repair a damaged left-rear tone ring or encoder if inspection confirms it is affecting the signal.

Can I keep driving?

Normal braking may remain, but ABS and stability control may be unavailable and brake assist may be reduced. Allow more stopping distance and drive cautiously, especially on wet or loose surfaces.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
