OBD-II fault code

C00A7: 4WD/AWD Transfer Case Unit Actuator Position Sensor A

What it means

The driveline control module monitors transfer case actuator position sensor A and sets this code when its signal indicates a sensor or circuit fault.

How it works

Transfer case actuator position sensor A reports the actuator's position to the driveline control module so it can determine whether the selected transfer case mode has been reached. The module monitors sensor A's signal for an invalid or faulty reading. A sensor A circuit or actuator problem can set C00A7 and interfere with mode selection.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty transfer case actuator position sensor
  2. Damaged or corroded sensor connector
  3. Open or shorted sensor wiring
  4. Transfer case actuator fault

Symptoms

  • 4WD or AWD warning
  • 4WD or AWD may be unavailable or limited
  • Transfer case may not shift modes correctly

How to diagnose it

  1. Read driveline-module codes and freeze-frame data to identify when the sensor A fault occurred and whether transfer case actuator or supply faults were recorded at the same time.
  2. Compare live data for sensor A position with the requested transfer case mode and with sensor B data, if supported, to identify an implausible or missing A signal.
  3. Inspect the sensor A connector and wiring at the transfer case actuator for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or damage.
  4. Check sensor A circuit power, ground, and signal using the vehicle wiring diagram and manufacturer's test procedure.
  5. If the circuit checks pass, test the actuator and sensor A function according to manufacturer service information before replacing either part.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the sensor A connector.
  • Repair damaged or corroded sensor A wiring or terminals.
  • Replace the sensor A component if it fails the manufacturer's circuit or functional tests.
  • Repair or replace the transfer case actuator if it is confirmed to cause the sensor A reading fault.
  • Replace or reprogram the driveline control module only if its sensor input is confirmed faulty.

Can I keep driving?

AWD or 4WD may be limited, and the transfer case may not confirm or complete a mode change; avoid relying on the affected mode. Stop if you notice binding, unusual driveline noise, or loss of drive.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
