What it means
The driveline control module monitors the transfer case actuator and sets this code when it detects a fault with the actuator or its operation.
How it works
The transfer case actuator moves the transfer case between drive modes when commanded by the driveline control module. The module checks whether the actuator operates as expected during a mode change. A failed actuator, electrical supply problem, or binding transfer case mechanism can set C00A6 and prevent the requested shift.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Failed transfer case actuator
- Damaged wiring or connector
- Power or ground fault
- Transfer case mechanism binding
Symptoms
- 4WD or AWD warning
- 4WD or AWD may be unavailable or limited
- Transfer case may not shift modes correctly
How to diagnose it
- Read driveline-module codes and freeze-frame data to see which mode change or operating condition was present when the actuator fault was detected.
- Check live data for the requested and reported transfer case modes, if available, to determine whether the actuator moves or the mode remains unchanged.
- Inspect the actuator connector and wiring for corrosion, loose pins, or damage, and check its power and ground connections using the manufacturer's procedure.
- With the vehicle safely secured, use the manufacturer's scan-tool procedure to command a transfer case shift and observe whether the actuator responds.
- If the electrical checks pass, assess for transfer case binding or internal mechanical problems according to the manufacturer's service information.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the transfer case actuator connector.
- Repair damaged actuator wiring or a verified power or ground fault.
- Replace the actuator if it fails the manufacturer's electrical or functional tests.
- Repair a confirmed binding or damaged transfer case mechanism.
- Replace or reprogram the driveline control module only if its command output is verified faulty.
Can I keep driving?
AWD or 4WD may be unavailable or the transfer case may not shift into the mode you select; avoid rough or low-traction routes that depend on that mode. Stop if the driveline binds, makes unusual noises, or the vehicle's movement is affected.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
