OBD-II fault code

C009D: 4WD/AWD Rear Differential Unit Actuator B Position Sensor A

What it means

The driveline control module monitors position sensor A on rear differential actuator B and sets this code when its signal indicates a sensor or circuit fault.

How it works

Position sensor A on rear differential actuator B reports actuator position to the driveline control module. C009D sets when this specific sensor’s signal indicates a fault or falls outside expected limits, so the module may not be able to verify actuator B’s position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Faulty actuator position sensor
  2. Damaged or corroded sensor connector
  3. Open or shorted sensor wiring
  4. Rear differential actuator fault

Symptoms

  • AWD or 4WD warning
  • AWD may be unavailable or limited
  • Rear differential may not engage or disengage correctly

How to diagnose it

  1. Check freeze-frame and live data for actuator B position sensor A and note whether its reading responds when actuator B is commanded.
  2. Inspect sensor A’s connector and wiring at rear differential actuator B for corrosion, loose pins, chafing, or physical damage.
  3. Compare sensor A’s reported position with the actuator B command and any available companion position data to identify a missing or implausible signal.
  4. Test the sensor A circuit’s power, ground, and signal for opens, shorts, or poor connections using the vehicle wiring information.
  5. If the circuit is sound, assess sensor A output and actuator B movement with the manufacturer’s diagnostic procedure.
  6. After repair, clear C009D and confirm sensor A data remains plausible during actuator B operation.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the position sensor A connector on actuator B.
  • Repair damaged or corroded wiring in sensor A’s circuit.
  • Replace position sensor A if its signal remains faulty with a verified circuit.
  • Repair or replace rear differential actuator B if it sticks or cannot reach the expected positions.
  • Carry out the manufacturer’s actuator calibration if required.

Can I keep driving?

AWD may be limited or unavailable, and the rear differential may not engage or disengage as intended. Avoid depending on AWD for traction until repaired, particularly on slippery or uneven roads.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
