What it means
The driveline control module compares the position signals from rear differential actuator A and sets this code when they do not agree as expected.
How it works
The driveline control module compares the position signals associated with rear differential actuator A to check that they agree about actuator movement. C009C sets when those signals do not correlate as expected, even if an individual sensor does not report a separate circuit fault.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Faulty actuator position sensor
- Damaged or corroded sensor connector
- Open or shorted sensor wiring
- Rear differential actuator fault
Symptoms
- AWD or 4WD warning
- AWD may be unavailable or limited
- Rear differential may not engage or disengage correctly
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame and live data for all available actuator A position sensors and note which readings disagree and when the mismatch occurs.
- Inspect the connectors and wiring for sensors A, B, and C at actuator A for corrosion, looseness, or damage that could distort one signal.
- Observe the sensor readings while actuator A is commanded through its normal operating range, checking whether one signal lags, jumps, or fails to track.
- Test the power, ground, and signal circuits for the sensor whose reading differs, using the vehicle’s wiring information.
- If the circuits are sound, check actuator A for binding or incomplete travel and evaluate the sensor relationship using the manufacturer’s procedure.
- Clear the code and verify that the actuator A position signals agree during the operation that previously set C009C.
Common fixes
- Clean and secure the connector for the actuator A sensor with the inconsistent reading.
- Repair wiring faults affecting one of actuator A’s position sensor signals.
- Replace the faulty actuator A position sensor if its circuit is sound and its reading remains out of step.
- Repair or replace actuator A if binding or incomplete movement causes the sensor disagreement.
- Perform the manufacturer’s calibration procedure if sensor correlation remains incorrect after repair.
Can I keep driving?
The module may limit AWD, and the rear differential may not engage or release properly. Avoid relying on AWD for low-traction driving until the sensor disagreement is resolved.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
