OBD-II fault code

C0092: 4WD/AWD Power Transfer Unit Position Sensor B

What it means

The control module monitors position sensor B on the 4WD/AWD power transfer unit to determine its position. It sets this code when the sensor signal is missing or outside the expected range.

At a glance

  • Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
  • The engine or gearbox may go into limp mode

How it works

Position sensor B on the 4WD/AWD power transfer unit reports the unit's position to the control module. The module sets C0092 when sensor B's signal is absent or outside its expected range, so it cannot reliably confirm the transfer unit position.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Position sensor failure
  2. Damaged wiring or connector
  3. Poor electrical connection or ground
  4. Power transfer unit mechanism out of position

Symptoms

  • ABS warning light on
  • ESC/stability control deactivated
  • Possible reduced brake assist
  • Speedometer may behave erratically

How to diagnose it

  1. Scan the ABS and driveline modules for related codes and freeze-frame data, then compare sensor B's reported position with the driver's selected 4WD/AWD mode.
  2. Inspect sensor B and its transfer-unit connector and harness for fluid intrusion, corrosion, loose terminals, or damage from heat or movement.
  3. Check the sensor's power, ground, and signal circuits for opens, shorts, and poor connections using the vehicle wiring diagram.
  4. With a scan tool, observe sensor B data while changing 4WD/AWD modes, noting whether the reading is missing, erratic, or inconsistent with the commanded position.
  5. If the circuit is sound, check transfer-unit linkage or mechanism movement and test or replace sensor B according to the manufacturer's specification.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the position sensor B connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Correct a poor ground or power connection in the sensor B circuit.
  • Replace a failed transfer-unit position sensor B after confirming its circuit is sound.
  • Repair a binding or mispositioned transfer-unit mechanism if it prevents the sensor from reporting the commanded position.

Can I keep driving?

The 4WD/AWD system and stability features may be limited, and the speedometer or brake-assist behavior may be affected as noted by the vehicle. Avoid demanding 4WD operation and have the fault checked promptly; stop driving if braking feels abnormal.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
