OBD-II fault code

C008A: Traction Control System (TCS) Mode Control (Subfault)

What it means

This code identifies a fault associated with TCS mode control. The specific failure depends on the diagnostic subtype.

How it works

The TCS mode control switch lets the driver select among traction-control modes offered by the vehicle. The control module monitors the mode switch input and sets this subfault when the selected-mode signal is not recognized or fails the subtype-specific check.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Mode switch fault

Symptoms

  • Traction-control warning light
  • Selected TCS mode may not work as expected

How to diagnose it

  1. Read the diagnostic subtype and freeze-frame data, and record which TCS mode is selected and what warning appears.
  2. Operate each available TCS mode setting and note whether the displayed or reported selection changes reliably.
  3. Inspect the mode switch for damage or sticking and check its connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, or chafing.
  4. Use a scan tool to monitor the TCS mode input while changing settings, checking whether the module sees the same selection as the driver.
  5. Test the switch and mode-control circuit against the manufacturer's specification before considering a control-module fault.

Common fixes

  • Clean and secure the mode switch connector or repair damaged wiring.
  • Replace a faulty or sticking TCS mode switch.
  • Correct a poor power, ground, or signal connection in the mode-control circuit.
  • Repair or replace the control module if circuit checks establish an internal input fault.

Can I keep driving?

The selected traction-control mode may not take effect, and traction control could remain in a default mode or become unavailable. Use cautious throttle on slippery or loose surfaces and do not assume a mode change succeeded based only on pressing the switch.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
