What it means
The brake control module monitors the brake fluid level sensor or switch circuit. It sets this code when the circuit is detected as open, so the module cannot reliably read the fluid level.
At a glance
- Usually lights the ABS or stability-control warning light
How it works
The brake control module monitors the open/closed state of the brake fluid level sensor or switch circuit to determine whether fluid level is adequate. It sets C004B when that circuit appears open, so the module cannot reliably receive the level signal.
Common causes
Most likely first.
- Wiring open
- Pin pushed back out of connector body
- Cracked solder joint inside the module or sensor
Symptoms
- ABS warning light on
- ESC/stability control deactivated
- Possible reduced brake assist
- Speedometer may behave erratically
How to diagnose it
- Read freeze-frame data and live fluid-level status to confirm the open-circuit fault and note whether the warning changes when the connector is moved.
- Check the brake fluid level on level ground and inspect for leaks before focusing on the electrical fault.
- Inspect the level sensor connector for a pushed-back pin, corrosion, looseness, or damaged wiring near the reservoir.
- Trace the sensor circuit for an open between the sensor and brake control module, checking continuity and connector pin fit against the wiring diagram.
- If the harness is intact, test the sensor or switch and module connection according to the manufacturer's specification.
Common fixes
- Seat a pushed-back terminal or repair a loose or corroded connector.
- Repair an open or damaged wire in the fluid level sensor circuit.
- Replace a faulty brake fluid level sensor or switch.
- Repair the brake control module or sensor solder connection only after circuit testing confirms the fault is internal.
Can I keep driving?
The module may be unable to detect low brake fluid, and ABS or stability functions may be affected. Check fluid level and leaks before driving; do not drive if fluid is low, a leak is present, or braking feels abnormal.
A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together
This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
