OBD-II fault code

B0051: First Row Center Seatbelt Sensor (Subfault)

What it means

This code identifies a fault associated with the first row center seat belt sensor. The restraint control module sets it when it detects a problem with this sensor; the specific fault is identified by accompanying subfault information.

How it works

The first-row center seat-belt sensor reports whether that seating position's belt is fastened to the restraint control module. The module monitors its signal and wiring for a fault; the exact electrical or status failure is described by the accompanying subfault information.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Damaged seat belt sensor wiring or connector
  2. Faulty seat belt sensor
  3. Seat belt buckle or latch fault
  4. Restraint control module fault

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on
  • Seat belt warning may stay on
  • Seat belt status may be misreported

How to diagnose it

  1. Read the restraint control module's B0051 subfault and freeze-frame data with a compatible scan tool before clearing the code.
  2. Check that the first-row center belt and buckle are present, latch normally, and are not obstructed or damaged.
  3. Inspect the center buckle sensor connector and wiring along the seat for loose connections, corrosion, pin damage, or damage from seat movement.
  4. Watch the first-row center belt-status data while latching and releasing the buckle and note whether the reported state follows it.
  5. Test the center sensor and its circuit according to the manufacturer's procedure before suspecting the restraint control module.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair damaged wiring to the first-row center buckle sensor.
  • Repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace the faulty center seat-belt sensor or buckle assembly as specified for the vehicle.
  • Repair or replace the restraint control module only after the sensor circuit and module connections are verified.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may be driveable, but the restraint system may not correctly recognize the first-row center belt, and an airbag warning can indicate a broader restraint-system fault. Have it diagnosed promptly and do not use that seating position unless its belt latches securely.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
