OBD-II fault code

B0050: Driver Seatbelt Sensor (Subfault)

What it means

This code identifies a fault associated with the driver seat belt sensor. The restraint control module sets it when it detects a problem with this sensor; the specific fault is identified by accompanying subfault information.

How it works

The driver seat-belt sensor reports the driver's belt status to the restraint control module. The module monitors the sensor and its circuit for an electrical or status fault; the accompanying subfault information is needed to identify the exact failure.

Common causes

Most likely first.

  1. Damaged seat belt sensor wiring or connector
  2. Faulty seat belt sensor
  3. Seat belt buckle or latch fault
  4. Restraint control module fault

Symptoms

  • Airbag warning light on
  • Seat belt warning may stay on
  • Seat belt status may be misreported

How to diagnose it

  1. Use a scan tool that can read restraint-system codes to record the B0050 subfault and freeze-frame data before clearing anything.
  2. With the vehicle parked, check whether the driver belt latches and releases normally and whether the warning changes with the belt status.
  3. Inspect the driver buckle sensor connector and nearby wiring for looseness, corrosion, pin damage, or chafing.
  4. Compare scan-tool driver belt-status data while latching and unlatching the belt to see whether the sensor signal changes reliably.
  5. Test the driver sensor circuit and buckle sensor using the manufacturer's diagnostic procedure, then consider the restraint control module only if the circuit and sensor pass.

Common fixes

  • Reconnect or repair damaged wiring at the driver buckle sensor.
  • Clean or repair corroded or damaged connector terminals.
  • Replace the faulty driver seat-belt sensor or buckle assembly as specified for the vehicle.
  • Repair or replace the restraint control module only after its power, ground, wiring, and sensor inputs are verified.

Can I keep driving?

The vehicle may remain driveable, but the airbag warning indicates the restraint system may not work as designed in a crash. Make sure the driver belt latches securely and arrange diagnosis promptly; do not rely on the warning light alone to confirm protection.

A code shows where the control module detected a fault, not always which part failed. Check the causes in order and confirm with a test before replacing parts. Have several codes? Check them together

This is a generic code: it means the same on every make. The car’s maker may add more detail in its own service information.
