Power steering fault

What it means

This usually means the power-steering system has a fault or reduced assistance. Red generally signals a serious problem, but colour and exact behaviour vary by manufacturer; check the owner’s manual.

What the symbol looks like: A steering wheel beside an exclamation mark is a common power-steering warning symbol; the exact symbol varies by vehicle.

Why it comes on

  • Low power-steering fluid in a hydraulic system
  • A leak or failed hydraulic pump
  • An electrical fault in electric power steering
  • A weak battery or charging-system problem
  • A damaged steering sensor or wiring

What to do

  1. Reduce speed and pull over somewhere safe if steering becomes unusually heavy.
  2. Switch off the engine and check the owner’s manual for this warning.
  3. If the vehicle has hydraulic steering, check for visible leaks without reaching near hot or moving parts.
  4. Arrange professional diagnosis; do not continue if steering control is impaired.

Can I keep driving?

If steering is heavy, erratic, or difficult to control, stop safely and arrange recovery. Even if it still steers normally, avoid unnecessary driving and have the fault checked promptly.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
