Amber and yellow lights

Overdrive off

What it means

This indicator means the transmission’s overdrive function has been disabled, so the vehicle may use higher engine speeds or different gear changes. Its amber colour is generally a status indicator, but the display and meaning can vary by manufacturer; check the owner’s manual.

What the symbol looks like: The letters O and D separated by a slash, above the letters O F F, all drawn as bold strokes.

Why it comes on

  • The driver pressed the overdrive-off button or selected the setting
  • The setting was left off after a previous drive
  • A transmission control or switch fault is affecting the indicator
  • A transmission fault has triggered a related warning on some vehicles

What to do

  1. Check whether the overdrive-off control was pressed
  2. Consult the owner’s manual to confirm what the setting changes
  3. Switch overdrive back on if appropriate for the road and driving conditions
  4. If the indicator stays on unexpectedly or the transmission behaves abnormally, arrange a vehicle check

Can I keep driving?

You can usually continue driving if the transmission feels normal. Expect higher engine speeds or reduced efficiency, and stop safely if the transmission slips, overheats, or behaves unusually.

Symbols and colours differ between makes and models. Your owner’s manual shows the exact lights of your car.
